Fight the Villain- ( Don't stop till you win)
I used to smoke cigarettes. Even if you don't smoke this is helpful. We all are addicted to something, coffee, email, twitter, alcohol, pornography, TV, laziness, negative thinking, the couch etc. Hit a nerve yet? Read on!
Quitting smoking was especially difficult. I smoked for 12 years and probably 9 of those years was close to 2 packs a day. I loved it! I can say that because I really did. I wish smoking didn't have negative health effects because I would still do it if that were the case. But thats not the point today, how I quit is.
Quitting is in the mind more than in the body even though the body is addicted as well. I tried to quit 20 or more times. I used the patch system over and over but the patch doesn’t make you quit. My Body got used to smoking a pack a day while wearing the patch. Yes thats pretty dangerous! I like to go overboard! There were times I had a dip or chew in all day, just kept adding to it and then still smoked a pack a day. Most people I know do one or the other, not both. I guess I like to be me and them at the same time! ha ha!

I quit the physical act of smoking in January of 2002, what day I am really not sure and I don’t care. January was the actual time I stopped putting cigarettes to my mouth and breathing in. The real quitting started 6-8 months earlier. I began a mental process and practiced it over and over again. I started thinking about quitting, then started imagining I was a nonsmoker and what that means, what that would look like. I started to think about it while I was smoking. After dinner I would go out for a smoke and think, in 6 months I wouldn’t be doing this after dinner. My heart sank, “What would I do then?” I thought. At times it was depressing. What about driving, what would I do with myself without a cig? My heart was breaking....... Whats funny is my heart was breaking while I was actually, literally, physically smoking a cigarette.
After months of mental preparation, while still smoking 2 packs a day, I felt ready. I felt like I had defeated the villain inside my head. This time I decided to use the gum. The gum allowed me to choose when the nicotine could enter my body. Since I was now mentally prepared, all that was left was the physical. Every day I held out as long as I could without a cigarette. When I couldn’t take it anymore it was time for a piece of gum. Pop a piece in and go about my business. Some days I chewed 3 or 4 pieces, others only 2, some days 5, then I just plain forgot to chew the gum, thats how I quit. After some time because my mind was prepared, my body followed suit. Yes, I will say it again, I quit smoking by forgetting to chew the gum. Its now January 2011, 9 years free from that bondage. You can forget also, go for it!
